Yet a set of tea-stained stainless rails or chalky aluminium trim can make an otherwise well-kept vessel look neglected. Metal hardware is an integral part of thorough exterior detailing, and it responds to salt and sun very differently from the surfaces around it. This guide takes a deep dive into that one component.

How Salt Air and UV Attack Marine Metals

Perth’s coastal environment is relentless on metal. Airborne salt settles on every fitting, draws in moisture, and creates the conditions for corrosion long before you ever see spray from the water. UV adds a second front of attack, breaking down protective films and accelerating oxidation.

  • Chrome-plated fittings carry a thin decorative coating over a base metal. Abrasives that scratch through the chrome expose the layer underneath to corrosion.

Routine Cleaning for Rails and Fittings

  2. Wash with a mild, pH-neutral marine soap and a soft cloth or sponge, working over the whole fitting rather than just the visible faces.

Tackling Tea-Staining and Light Corrosion Safely

Tea-staining on stainless is usually a surface issue rather than deep damage, which means it can often be reversed without harming the finish. A dedicated stainless cleaner or a mild acidic product formulated for marine metals will lift the brown streaks when worked in gently with a soft cloth and rinsed off properly.

Light aluminium oxidation can be reduced with a suitable metal cleaner, but stop as soon as the finish comes back rather than polishing through the anodised layer. If corrosion has progressed to pitting, where you can feel small craters in the metal, you are past the point of a simple clean and the fitting needs closer assessment.

The key distinction is this: staining sits on top of the metal, while corrosion eats into it. Staining wipes away and returns; pitting does not.

Protecting and Sealing Metal After Cleaning

Clean metal is vulnerable metal. Once you have removed salt and staining, the surface benefits from a protective treatment that slows re-corrosion between cleans.

A quality marine metal polish restores shine and leaves a thin barrier against moisture. For stainless, passivation treatments help rebuild the chromium oxide layer that resists tea-staining. On aluminium, a protective sealant guards the anodised surface and delays that chalky bloom. Applied after every thorough clean, these treatments buy time and keep fittings looking sharp for longer.

Preventing Galvanic Issues and Staying on Schedule

Galvanic corrosion is best prevented rather than cured. Keep dissimilar metals isolated where possible, use insulating washers or barriers at contact points, and check sacrificial anodes so they do the job of protecting more valuable fittings. Any fitting that looks unusually eaten away at a junction with another metal deserves a closer look.

A simple rhythm keeps everything in condition. Rinse fittings with fresh water after each outing, do a proper wash and dry regularly, and reapply protective treatments on a set schedule through the year.
